about

Dryfall represents an expanded notion of Weathers’ Land Ethic series, an ongoing project that weaves together audio journal with reimaginings of place. The single piece is composed entirely of materials recorded on a work trip to California through the San Francisco Bay Area and Death Valley National Park.

Accompanied by prepared guitar and synthesizer and haunted by free jazz, the thrust of Dryfall is anchored by long recordings of interiors and exteriors: the downtown Berkeley BART station, a lightwell at Weathers’ hotel, charcoal kilns in Death Valley, and Badwater Basin, a salt creek at the lowest point in North America. The resulting sonic assemblage traces the places where Weathers trod while transforming the component audio elements into a wholly new acoustic space.
